A little help how to install and configure mIRC for Sunday's Rustie Chat
step by step for absolute beginners - no technical wisdom required ;-)

mirc

This is for version 6.16 but newer versions should work the same.

I installed mIRC on a Windows 98 SE machine - sure it looks different on other operating systems but it's the same procedure.

Okay...

01) After double-clicking the .exe-file you should see this.
Click "Next >".
mirc

02) Read the complete license agreement (if you want) and click "Yes" to accept it and continue.
mirc

03) Change the destination folder for installation if desired and click "Install".
mirc

04) The installation itself needs seconds only.
mirc

05) When installion is done mark the checkbox "Launch mIRC" and click "Finish".
First you'll see is this:

mirc

06) Click "Continue".
(If you want you could register your copy of mIRC - it's shareware but will work after runout of the 30 days evaluation period.)

Now it's time to configure mIRC...

mirc

07) Insert your name, your (working) mail address, chose a nickname and an alternative nickname (if your first nickname is in use). These both names are limited to nine charakters (no spaces).
Next click on "Servers" in the left tree structure.

mirc

08) In the upper right dropdown menu (IRC Network) chose "EFnet"e.

mirc

09) You could chose a server for this network in the lower dropdown menu (IRC Server) but "EFnet: Random server" would work anyway.
When done select "Options" in the tree structure.

mirc

10) Mark the checkboxes as shown.
Select "Local Info" now.

mirc

11) It should look like this.
The program will insert needed info automatically.
Next step: select "Identd".

mirc

12) Mark all checkboxes.
Select "Connect" in the tree structure and click "Connect To Server" on the right (like shown in pics for steps 07 to 09).

mIRC now connects to an EFnet server now and a new window will open.

mirc

13) Enter the name of the channel you want to join: "#Rusties".

mirc

14) Click "Join" and if everything works well a new window will open and you're in the Rustie Chat!

Your mIRC window should look similar to this now:

mirc

15) You could start chatting now but...

We'll do some last configuration so the next time you'd start mIRC you could join the Rustie Chat much easier.

mirc

16) Open the "Favorites" menu of the mIRC program window and click "Add to Favorites".

mirc

17) Mark the "Join on connect" checkbox ("Description" contains actual channel's topic but you could fill in what you want) and click "OK".

Next time you'd start mIRC you should see the Server Window in background.

mirc

18) All you'd have to do is to click on "Continue" to get connected to the #Rusties channel automatically.
